Closed case files, 1885-1976, 1980-1985; 1994-2004.

Closed case and investigation files pertaining to anti-trust action, criminal prosecution, boundary disputes, patents, student loans, Highway Commission cases, industrial forfeitures, and others. The records consist of legal documents, subpoenas, writs, findings, correspondence, notes, reports, newspaper clippings, briefs, and related material. Beginning in 1991, only precedent-setting, historically significant cases as identified by the supervising attorneys and/or division administrator, and reviewed by a panel of DOJ and SHSW personnel, are retained. These cases may include, but are not limited to, suits involving civil rights, Indian treaty rights, environmental issues, labor relations, misconduct by public officials, and defense of state programs that have constitutional dimensions. Files for cases dating after 1970 are now being divided into categories of significance by Dept. of Justice attorneys. Only "historically significant" case files are being retained in the State Archives for 1970-present; these are cataloged separately. The post-1970 case files currently in this series are to be evaluated for historical significance and either discarded or transferred to the post-1970 case file series. The processed portion of this series is summarized above, dates 1885-1963, and is described in the register. There are additional accessions dating 1961-1976, 1980-1985, 1994-2004 which are described below.
